Do you consider yourself a photographer? If so, the Sunny 16 Camera Club is looking for you for its first photo contest.
The contest, open to amateur and professional photographers, is accepting entries daily through May 20 at Shutterbug Photo, 1207 Broadway Ave. Entry fee is $10 a photo for regular division for ages over 18 and $2 a photo for junior division, which is for ages 18 and under.
Entry packets can be picked up at Shutterbug and at the Capitol Arts Center or downloaded at the club's Web site, www.sunny16 club.com. The contest is sponsored by Shutterbug, Capitol Arts Alliance, Gerald Printing, Coca-Cola Bottling Co. and Sunny 16.
Sunny 16, a group of photographers designed to bring amateurs and professionals together, started in 2000, club President Janet Young said.
“It started with a handful of photographers sitting at Shutterbug talking about photography,” she said. “We now have about 45 members.”
Young said the contest is a regional one.
“We're reaching out to a 70-mile radius of Bowling Green,” she said. “We want to generate interest in photography and bring photographers to Bowling Green.”
The club members chose to have the contest because they wanted to do something for the community, Young said.
“We read about other communities doing photo contests,” she said.
Although the club began collecting entries April 15, few have arrived, Young said. She said she hopes more people become involved.
“We've only gotten five entries so far,” she said.
Entries must be two dimensional with a minimum of 8x10 and a maximum of 11X14. No slides or transparencies will be allowed, Young said.
“They can be prints or CDs,” she said. “With electronic submissions, use the highest resolution you can get, quality-wise.”
The contest is divided into three categories - color, monochrome and digital photo art - with seven subcategories: action, animals, scenic, people, floral, creative lighting and travel. The contest is juried and will be judged by a panel of five judges from various backgrounds.
Thousands of dollars worth of prizes are provided by Shutterbug, including a Best of Show award in which the winner will receive $1,000 in photo enlargements, Young said. There will also be first, second, third and honorable mentions.
First-place winners and Best of Show will be printed by Shutterbug and displayed June 3-24 at the Capitol Arts Center's Mezzanine Gallery. An awards ceremony is from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. June 3 from at Capitol.
