Sports briefs: Lady Gators blank Graves Co.

Junior Krista Carter had a goal and an assist for Greenwood on Saturday, helping the Lady Gators knock off visiting Graves County 3-0 at Drakes Creek Middle School.

Sophomore Kaitlyn Thomison and junior Heather Price added goals for Greenwood (9-2-1), while freshman Whitney Young had an assist.

Graves County fell to 7-4-1. Greenwood hosts Monroe County on Monday at 7 p.m.

Hilltoppers win first game, face Belmont today

Western Kentucky's men's soccer team faces Belmont today at 2 p.m. in the final game of the Fairfield Inn Bowling Green Hilltopper Classic at the WKU Soccer Complex.

The Hilltoppers (1-2-2) earned the berth in today's game by picking their first win of the season on Friday, beating Centenary 2-0. Ben Backstrom's second goal of the season came in the 61st minute, and Brad Magnuson set the final tally off an assist from Benard Airo in the 85th minute.

WKU outshot the Cyclones 14-8, and goalkeeper Kyle Schroeder made four saves in his second shutout of the season.

Lady Toppers take two at Towson tournament

The Western Kentucky volleyball team picked up victories over Towson and Maryland-Baltimore County on Saturday to close out the Towson Invitational in Towson, Md.

The Lady Toppers (10-3) swept the host Tigers 3-0 (30-22, 30-18, 30-22) before handling Maryland-Baltimore County 3-1 (30-24, 23-30, 30-28, 30-18).

Against Towson, Brittany Bowen and Megan Argabright both had match-highs of 11 kills. Aquila Orr's career-high 22 kills paced WKU against Maryland-Baltimore County, while Argabright and Jenna Gideon finished with 14 and 13 kills, respectively.

On Friday in Towson, Western fell in three games to No. 21 Dayton, 26-30, 22-30, 21-30. Orr had 12 kills in that match, while Kelly Hofmeyer had a match-high 16 digs.

The Lady Toppers host Belmont on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at E.A. Diddle Arena. WKU then opens Sun Belt Conference play at Troy on Friday and South Alabama on Saturday.

EKU runners take titles at Old Timers Classic

Runners from Eastern Kentucky won both the men's and women's races on Saturday at the 26th Annual Paul Turner Old Timers Classic at Kereiakes Park.

Eastern's Jacob Korir took the men's 5-mile run title with a time of 24:56.73, while Katy Ankrom won the women's 5K run in 17:36.00.

Western Kentucky's top women's finisher was Janet Jesang, who finished fourth in 17:46.82. Eimar O'Brien was 12th in 18:13.63, Natalie Leeper was 16th in 18:26.01, Heather Colter was 27th in 18:56.37, Ashley Moore was 32nd in 19:08.27 and Amanda Adams was 33rd in 19:10.49.

Bethuel Kiplagat paced the Hilltoppers by placing 21st in 26:29.84. Travis Keown was 45th in 27:50.43, Drew Hawkins was 57th in 28:09.37, Patrick Hammond was 59th in 28:17.43, Daniel Kipsiro was 60th in 28:19.89, Brian Dugan was 64th in 28:36.46, Craig Smith was 65th in 28:36.94, Mike Duncan was 68th in 28:42.30, DJ Croxton was 88th in 29:32.16 and Ben White was 93rd in 30:05.00
