Sean Penhale, Peyton Thomas and Emily Waits of Western Kentucky’s men’s and women’s swimming and diving program were honored Wednesday by the Sun Belt Conference.
Penhale was awarded men’s swimmer of the week, Thomas was men’s diver of the week and Waits was women’s diver of the week.
Penhale competed in four events during the recent Hilltopper Invitational. For the four races, the Calgary, Alberta, native broke four Bill Powell Natatorium records on the way to four victories. His new pool record in the 1,650-yard free in 15:28.12 was also good enough to make the NCAA ‘B’ provisional cut time.
Penhale broke the 500 free pool record in 4:32.03 and the 400 IM record in 4:01.49. The sophomore also helped the 800 free relay team finish first in 6:51.20.
Thomas took first in both the one-meter and three-meter diving events at the Hilltopper meet. His 329.40 score in the three-meter broke his own school record. The sophomore from Lubbock, Texas, tallied 267.20 points in his first-place finish in the one-meter.
Waits won the one-meter dive at the Topper Invitational with her score of 253.60, which is the fourth-best total in school history.
The junior finished third in the three-meter dive, totaling 249.50 points.
Both squads will be back in action this weekend when they travel to Little Rock, Ark., to compete in the UALR Christmas Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
