Western Kentucky opened the indoor track and field season Saturday with record-setting performances at the Middle Tennessee Christmas Invitational at the Murphy Center in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
The teams combined to record eight all-time top-five results and brought home seven individual titles.
WKU won both the men’s and women’s mile relays to close the meet, with the Hilltoppers setting a new school standard in the event. The Lady Toppers recorded the third-fastest time in school history.
The men’s team of Steve Wilson, Gavin Smellie, Terrill McCombs and Jason Browhow passed the baton in 3:15.24 for the victory, while the women’s team of Kellie Morrison, Temi Akojie, Valerie Brown and Heather Hammond won in 3:48.74.
Akojie, McCombs and Wilson also picked up individual titles. Akojie, a native of Paducah, won the 55-meter dash in a time of 7.08 seconds in the finals after recording a qualifying time of 7.09 in the preliminaries.
McCombs - who hails from Upper Marlboro, Md. - recorded the second-fastest time in school history in 47.98 seconds. Wilson won the men’s 800 meters in a time of 1:58.75, while teammate Jarvaun Lindsay was third in 1:59.80.
In the men’s weight throw, Matt Taitt recorded the second-best toss in school history, winning the event with a throw of 56-11. Also in the throws, Brian Soverns took home top honors in the shot, recording a personal best in the event with a put of 52-6.5.
Browhow took runner-up honors in the 55-meter hurdles, recording a time of 7.48 seconds in the finals after a qualifying time of 7.61 in the prelims. In the women’s mile, Eimear O’Brien finished second with a time of 5:11.78. Kayla Pittman, who was competing in her first collegiate meet, was the runner-up in the high jump, successfully clearing 5-3.
Three all-time Lady Topper marks were set in the weight throw by Felicia Yearwood, Geri Brown and Sarah Lambrecht. The trio moved to third, fourth and fifth all-time in the event at WKU with throws of 51-9.5, 50-11, and 50-4, respectively. Geri Brown also moved to second all-time in the women’s shot put after recording a personal-best toss of 46-5.
The teams break for the holidays and return to action Jan. 11-12 in the Kentucky Invitational at the Nutter Center in Lexington.
