After five seasons at Western Kentucky, including an NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 appearance this season, men’s basketball coach Darrin Horn has decided to take the same position at South Carolina, WKU athletic director Wood Selig confirmed this afternoon.
Selig said Horn spoke to WKU President Gary Ransdell earlier today and that Horn has officially tendered his resignation. Ransdell told Selig of Horn’s plans; as of now, Selig has not spoken directly to Horn.
Horn will replace the recently retired coach Dave Odom at South Carolina. The executive committee of South Carolina’s Board of Trustees is expected to meet on Tuesday morning in regard to Horn’s hiring.
It is not yet clear what Western’s timetable is for finding Horn’s successor.
Also, the Daily News has learned that a men’s basketball player meeting is expected to take place today, although the time and location of the meeting is not known.
No South Carolina financial terms have been reported. Horn had three years remaining on his current WKU contract with a base salary of $160,000. The contract includes a $200,000 buyout and a clause that requires Horn’s new school to play a four-year home-and-home series with the Hilltoppers.
Horn is 111-48 in his five seasons at WKU.
