Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation for Childhood Cancer (ALSF) and Country Time Lemonade today announced a national partnership to host lemonade “Grand Stands” across the country this summer in an initiative to raise funds and awareness for childhood cancer research. A Grand Stand is a large fundraising event that brings together an entire community to raise money in the fight against childhood cancer, the number one disease killer in children under the age of 15 in the United States according to the National Cancer Institute. The 11 Country Time Grand Stands will begin at the end of May and continue through July. The Miller Family Stand comes to Bowling Green, KY on Saturday, July 12, 2008

The Miller Family will host their 4th Annual Alex’s Lemonade Stand in memory of Reid and Randon Miller, who both passed away from childhood cancer. The Annual Miller Stand, coordinated mostly by 14-year-old Riley Miller and her friends, has become a community wide event, raising more than $30,000. With stands throughout the Bowling Green, KY area during Lemonade Days weekend, all volunteers will gather for a celebratory closing party on Saturday night. Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) emerged from the front-yard lemonade stand of cancer patient Alexandra “Alex” Scott (1996-2004). At the age of 4, Alex announced that she wanted to hold a lemonade stand to raise money to help find a cure for all children with cancer. Since Alex’s first stand, the Foundation bearing her name has evolved into a national fundraising movement. This summer marks the 5th Annual National Lemonade Days on June 6, 7 and 8 when volunteers host lemonade stands throughout the country.

Following the lead of Alex’s Original Stand located in Wynnewood, PA (Saturday, June 7), a suburb of Philadelphia, the nationwide call to action will feature Grand Stands in the following cities: Rowayton, CT (Sunday, May 25); Hershey, PA (Saturday, June 7); Nashville, TN (Saturday, June 7); Irvine, CA (Saturday, June 7); Atlantic Beach, FL (Saturday, June 7); Kent, OH (Saturday, June 7); Fort Mill, SC (Saturday, June 7); Bowling Green, KY (Saturday, July 12); Hanover, NH (Saturday, July 19, 2008); and San Diego, CA (Saturday, July 26). In addition to giving participants the opportunity to donate to Alex’s cause at one of these events, ALSF and Country Time will give participants the option to donate online.

“Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation is proud to partner with Country Time Lemonade in this national initiative to raise awareness for childhood cancer causes,” said Jay Scott, Alex’s father. “Alex used Country Time for her lemonade stands from the very start and we have maintained that tradition in her honor. We have seen firsthand the realities of childhood cancer and understand that finding a cure needs to be imminent. We appreciate our partners’ support.”

“Country Time is a long-time supporter of Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation’s mission to find a cure for all childhood cancers,” said Sivonne Davis, Brand Manager of Country Time. “We have been raising money for the Foundation through the sale of specially marked lemonade canisters in stores across the country dating back to 2005. This year, we wanted to make an even larger impact by rallying communities behind the cause in a grander way n the Grand Stands presented a fantastic vehicle to encourage support in a family-fun atmosphere with Alex’s own choice of lemonade.”

“I remember being so inspired by how someone so young and herself battling cancer could look beyond her condition and really make a difference,” said Riley Miller, a Grand Stand Host and the sister of two brothers who lost their battle with childhood cancer. “I wanted so badly to do something to help like Alex, so I decided to host my own lemonade stand, and with the support of my friends we soon we had over 200 volunteers. I realized this was too much for a front yard stand, and with my friends and community, knew we would make this an annual Grand Stand.”

Grand Stands were first introduced in 2007 as part of Lemonade Days. Alex’s Original Stand had grown from a simple lemonade stand to a carnival-type day, complete with a dunk tank, butterfly release, live music, great food and so much more in Alex’s hometown of Wynnewood, PA. The Grand Stands are modeled after this atmosphere, creating a real community event where friends, family and neighbors can come enjoy time together, all for a good cause.

About Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation

Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation is a registered 501(c)3 public charity that grew out of the front yard lemonade stand of Alexandra “Alex” Scott, a pediatric cancer patient. In 2000, at the tender age of 4, Alex opened her very first lemonade stand with the hope of raising money for pediatric cancer causes, specifically research leading to a cure. With the help of tens of thousands of volunteers who hold stands, the donors who give, and generous sponsors, the Foundation has been able to continuously grow and prosper. Since its inception, Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation has raised over $19 million, funding over 80 research projects across the country.

Brad and Lorie Lower's daughter, Louise, was diagnosed with neuroblastoma shortly after her 4th birthday. Louise underwent surgery at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC shortly after her diagnosis. After five years Louise remains cancer free. In the third year of holding their lemonade stand, the Lowers met Jeff and Heather Lux, whose son Austin, had also been diagnosed with neuroblastoma. Austin received a combination of treatments in Boston, MA and continues to do well. Prior to the 2007 stand, Scott and Jennifer DeNobile met the Luxes and the Lowers and shared the story of their son, Vincent. Vincent too had been diagnosed with neuroblastoma at the age of 13 months and after a successful surgery at Memorial Sloan-Kettering in New York is cancer free after three years. The fact that Louise, Austin, and Vincent are all healthy is nothing short of miraculous. For more information or to donate to the Baxter stand, visit: http://www.firstgiving.com/baxlemonade08

Foundation to Distribute Over $4 Million in Grant Awards for Childhood Cancer Research

Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) for Childhood Cancer today announced the awarding of over $4 million in new pediatric cancer research grants to 23 institutions and universities in 13 states across the country. One of the research grants will include international investigation into Burkitt’s lymphoma in Africa. In 2008, the Foundation will fund 30 new grants in order to continue the development and testing of new treatments as well as the improvement of availability of clinical trials, and most importantly finding cures for all childhood cancers.

ALSF emerged from the front yard lemonade stand of cancer patient Alexandra “Alex” Scott (1996-2004). At the age of 4, Alex announced that she wanted to hold a lemonade stand to raise money to help find a cure for all children with cancer. Since Alex held that first stand, the Foundation bearing her name has raised more than $19 million towards fulfilling Alex’s dream of finding a cure, funding over 80 research projects nationally.

Utilizing the funds raised through lemonade stands, events, sponsorships and donations, ALSF is able to work directly with doctors and researchers to identify specific ways the Foundation can make a difference for children in need of new advances in treatment. The Foundation uses a review process that includes 36 leading scientists from across the country. Through this process, 2008 grant recipients were chosen at top research hospitals in Arizona, California, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah and Washington.

“We are so very proud that Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation is able to continue funding and expanding these cutting edge cancer research projects,” said Jay Scott, Alex’s father. “We are still amazed that what our daughter started in our front yard has turned into a national movement to fight childhood cancer and funds millions of dollars in research projects that are truly making a difference in the lives of those touched by the disease.”

“The grants awarded in 2008 range from very basic research looking at the fundamental basis of childhood cancer to projects focused on clinical application or recent breakthroughs,” said Dr. John M. Maris, MD, Chair of the Medical Advisory Board for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation. “The grants provided by ALSF are continuing to fill an incredibly important void at a time of significantly reduced funding. Perhaps more importantly, the quality of the research applications has increased steadily suggesting that ALSF is becoming a major vehicle for driving discovery in childhood cancer.”

“I am absolutely delighted to have been selected for an Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation Infrastructure Grant,” said Julia Glade Bender, MD, of Columbia University in New York City. “I have always been inspired by Alex and the organization she created, I promise to continue the fight to find better therapies for childhood cancer.”

The Foundation currently focuses on four types of grants:

Epidemiology Awards supporting the research of investigators who have a specific focus on the incidence and prevalence of childhood cancer and the prevention of childhood cancer.

Innovation Awards providing critical and significant seed funding designed for experienced investigators with a novel and promising approach to finding causes and cures for childhood cancers.

Program Infrastructure Awards providing funding for support personnel who speed up the process of enrolling children with cancer in clinical trials.

Young Investigator Awards designed to fill the critical need for start up funds for new researchers and physicians to pursue promising research ideas.
