Several longstanding sporting events in the area boast considerable tradition and history.

But perhaps none can compete with the South Central Swim and Dive Meet.

The annual summer event is in its 52nd year, and this year runs Friday through Sunday at both the Indian Hills Country Club in Bowling Green and the Greenville Country Club in Greenville.

More than 130 swimmers - ranging in age from 5 to 19 years old - from Bowling Green and Warren County will take part in the three-day event.

“This is kind of a tradition here with summertime swimmers,” Indian Hills Country Club coach Ron Prieskorn said. “It’s been around for over 50 years, so it’s really unique because on a lot of the teams that participate, we have a lot of second-generation swimmers where their parents competed in it and we even have some kids that have grandparents that competed in it.

“It really makes it kind of a special event and it gives the kids kind of a championship feel to end their swimming season - it would be comparable to these all-star baseball tournaments that are going on, it gives us that same atmosphere.”

Swimmers from Bowling Green, Indian Hills, Greenville, Hopkinsville, Madisonville and Russellville will all take part in the event. A diving competition will be Friday at Indian Hills and the swimming events will be Saturday and Sunday in Greenville.

For a majority of competitors, it will be their first chance to swim in a competitive environment.

“This is kind of their introduction to competitive swimming. We start kids sometimes when they’re 4 years old and this is usually their first exposure to swimming,” Prieskorn said. “And we’ve seen over the years that some kids who get started with this have some success in high school and then maybe go on to swim in college.”

Ten-year-old Paige Fields is one of the younger Bowling Green-area swimmers who hopes to have a strong showing this weekend. She will have several chances to do so - Fields will compete in the 50-meter butterfly, the 50-meter backstroke, the 50-meter breaststroke, the 50-meter freestyle and the 100-meter individual medley, as well as several other relay events.

“I’m really excited to be going into it,” Fields said. “It’s kind of nerve-racking because you have to qualify the first day to make it through the second day, and the top six go and get medals.

“But you also get points for the team, so you want to try to get those high points also.”

Prieskorn said that over the years, the two main powers in this event have been the teams from Bowling Green and Indian Hills - something he doesn’t expect to change this weekend.

“Traditionally, Bowling Green and Indian Hills are the two clubs that have won - those two clubs have won probably 90 percent of the championships over the last 50 years,” he said. “We’ve had the upper hand over the past several years - I think we’ve won the last six championships, but Indian Hills is making a surge to catch us and that should make for a very interesting meet this year.”

While the bragging rights of being multiple-time champion will be on the line this weekend once again, Fields said she is confident her team will be able to make it seven in a row.

“We’ve won it six years in a row now,” she said. “So we can definitely win it again, we’re very strong.”
