LOUISVILLE — Warren County South’s Adam Jones was a one-man show during Sunday’s 11-year-old Little League State Tournament game against Lexington Western National, helping lead South to a dominating 10-0 win in four innings at Valley Sports.
Jones singled, doubled and capped his seven-RBI day with a grand slam to help Warren County improve to 2-0 in pool play.
“I think we’re in good shape to get to (Tuesday’s semifinals),” Warren County manager Jim King said. “We definitely want the one seed. We broke it down into four steps and this is the third step. We want the number one seed and then be able to move onto the next phase.”
Jones got Warren County going in the first with an RBI double, but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple.
King said Jones was motivated to make up for that mistake.
“Adam hit that rope and drove in the first run of the game, but he was very disappointed in himself for getting caught coming to third,” King said. “To come back and keep his head in the game, that was nice.”
He got a chance one inning later, following Cameron Shyrock’s two-run double with a two-run single that made the score 5-0.
Two batters later, Jones scored on a groundout to give South a six-run advantage.
South finished off its scoring in the third when Jones smacked a grand slam to dead center, making the score 10-0.
After Shyrock limited Lexington to one hit in the first three innings, Lexington Western tried to avoid the 10-run mercy rule in the fourth with a mini-rally off Jones, who came in to relieve Shyrock.
Chase Caldwell singled with one out and tried to score on Tyler Newton’s double, but was tagged out sliding into home.
“I was really happy to see them preserve the shutout on the relay,” King said. “Our centerfielder hustled over and got to the ball and threw it to Wes, who threw it in. That was a great catch and tag from Lucas (Holland). These kids take a lot of pride in that.”
Lexington then put runners at first and third, before Jones got a groundout to end the game.
Warren County South finished with eight hits and 10 of South’s 11 players reached base at least once.
“We hit up and down the lineup,” King said. “All 11 of them can hit. That makes my job a lot easier.”
Warren County South wraps up pool play today against South Oldham at 5 p.m.
