Art

The Warren County Public Library will feature the work of Lynne Ferguson in the Porter Caf/ at 1225 State St. through Oct. 31. Ferguson, a native Kentuckian, is artist-in-residence at the Kentucky Library & Museum at Western Kentucky University. She works in mixed media, oil and acrylic paint, and collage.

Memphis Marsha’s will host the exhibition “A Slice Of Italy” through Oct. 18 on regular gallery days from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays-Saturdays. Owner-artist Marsha Heidbrink will show paintings, jewelry and notecards inspired by her 2007 trip to Italy. The exhibition was awarded “Best Use Of Theme” for the Bowling Green International Festival Gallery Walk. The gallery is at 524 E. 12th Ave.

The prints of Gayle Novick will be on display at the Cancer Center of The Medical Center until Nov. 15.

VSA Arts of KY presents “Love in Any Language,” featuring the work of artists affiliated with VSA Arts of KY through Oct. 31. The gallery is at 515 E. 10th Ave.

The Presbyterian Church at 10th Avenue and State Street will have an exhibition featuring artwork by youth of the church through Nov. 21. The church exhibits may be viewed in the Fellowship Hall, 10th Avenue entrance, weekdays during work hours.

Campus

The Western Kentucky University Symphonic Band will have a concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Downing University Center Auditorium. Tickets start at $5. For more information, call 745-3751.

The Bowling Green Western Symphony Orchestra Autumn Collage Concert will be at 3 p.m. Oct. 19 in the Ivan Wilson Fine Arts Center Recital Hall. For ticket information, call 745-7681.

Western Kentucky University will have a woodwind ensemble at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and a tuba/euphonium ensemble at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Both concerts are free and in Ivan Wilson Fine Arts Center Recital Hall.

The Western Kentucky University Children’s Theatre will present “Totally Red” at 4 p.m. Friday, at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday and at 3 p.m. Sunday in Gordon Wilson Hall Lab Theatre. Western Kentucky University’s Hardin Planetarium will present “50 Years in Space.” Shows will be at 7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays through October, except. Oct. 19, and at 2 p.m. Sundays. The doors will open 15 minutes prior to the show with no one being admitted after the free program begins. Anyone under 12 should be accompanied by an adult.

Ten pieces from the original 1881 fountain from Fountain Square Park will be on display through November in the Kentucky Library and Museum.

Warren County Sights and Sounds, an exhibit presenting the history and culture of Bowling Green and Warren County in photographs and film, will be in Western Kentucky University’s Kentucky Library & Museum. The exhibit is the result of a two-year joint project during which about 150 photographs and 45 feet of moving film related to Bowling Green and Warren County were collected. Sponsors of the project and exhibit are The Landmark Association, The Bowling Green/Warren County Historic Preservation Board, Insight Communications and The Kentucky Library & Museum. Sights and Sounds of Warren County will be in the Museum’s Garden Gallery and continues through Dec. 7.

Exhibits at the Kentucky Building on Western Kentucky University’s campus include: “U.S. Bank Celebration of the Arts,” which opens Sunday; “VSA Arts: Side by Side,” “Recommended by Duncan Hines,” “Western 100,” “Growing Up Victorian,” “Roads, Rails and Rivers,” “Hascal Haile: Guitar-maker to the Stars” and “Taking the Mystery out of Prehistory.” For more information, contact the Kentucky Building at 745-2592.

The Factory at Cave City will feature The Moon Woods Band from 8 p.m. to midnight on the first Saturday of each month. The facility is on U.S. 31-W, just north of the Ky. 90 intersection across from Dollar General.

Theater

Reservations are needed by Wednesday to participate in Fountain Square Players Murder-Mystery event. This year the event will be at the Old L&N Depot at 7 p.m. Nov. 13 and will benefit both FSP and the Historic Railpark and Museum. In addition to the murder mystery, there will be appetizers and beverages. Tickets are $100 for a couple or $60 for a single person and are limited to 125 guests.

Expressions Performing Arts wants to start a Creative Workshop Group for those interested in the performing arts, including traditional and improvisational storytelling, comedy, drama and Imagination Theatre as an art form. For more information, contact Robin Baldwin at 746-2988

Odds & Ends

The American Red Cross has blood drives from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each Friday at its office, 430 Center St. Additional drives will be from noon to 6 p.m. today at Auburn Baptist Church, 115 N. Lincoln St.; from noon to 6 p.m. Monday at the Community Education Complex, 799 Veteran’s Way in Morgantown; and from noon to 6 p.m. Oct. 17 at Scottsville Baptist Church, 301 E. Main St.

The annual Shaker Farm Day, sponsored by the Logan Telephone Cooperative and Auburn Banking Co., will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 18. Kentucky craftspeople will demonstrate various Shaker farm duties and crafts. Costumed volunteers and museum staff will demonstrate a wide array of farm chores for visitors, including lard rendering, candle dipping and butter-making. Admission is $7 for adults and $2 for children.

Staff at Barren River Lake State Resort Park will lead an interpretive hike along a 1-mile nature trail Sunday. The hike will take about 1 1/2 hours and goes through a heavily wooded area of the park. Participants will see a wide variety of trees and possibly some of the wildlife in the area, which could include triplet and twin white tail deer fawns. Participants should wear comfortable clothes, hiking boots or tennis shoes (no flip flops). Bring drinking water and apply sunscreen. Hikers should meet in front of the lodge at 1 p.m. Terrain is easy to moderate.

Reservations are being taken for “A Shaker Breakfast,” hosted by the Shaker Museum at South Union. Served in the 1869 Shaker Tavern Bed and Breakfast, the meal will be offered Saturday, Nov. 1 and Nov. 8. Two seatings are available each day on a limited basis at 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Reservations are required. The Civil War-era menu, taken directly from detailed Shaker journals, includes scrambled eggs, country sausage, fried chicken, buttermilk biscuits and gravy, buttered Irish potatoes, baked sweet potatoes, fresh asparagus, Shaker sweet cake and Kentucky peach cobbler. The Bowling Green Fire Department will have its Firehouse Festival from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday in the Home Depot Parking lot, with free food and drinks and demonstrations.

Bowling Green Parks and Recreation Halloween Fest will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 18 at Preston Miller Park, with games, face painting and free trick or treating. Food will be available for purchase.

Landscape designer and author Jon Carloftis will be the guest speaker at 6 p.m. Oct. 16 at the Warren County Public Library.

Chaney’s Dairy Barn will host its corn maze until harvest. Going through the maze is $6 and includes a scoop of ice cream. The maze will be open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday; from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday and from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. For more information, call 843-5567.

Kentucky State Parks offers 10 percent off lodging and camping rates for current and former members of the military. The discount is good for lodge rooms, cottages and campgrounds any time of the year, based on availability. To get the discount, guests will need to show proof of service such as discharge papers, military ID or VFW member card, at check in.

The SKY Farmers Market will be open from 7 a.m. to noon Saturdays and from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays in front of the Riverside Building at The Medical Center on U.S. 31-W By-Pass. Kentucky-grown agricultural, horticultural and artisan products will be available for purchase.

Karaoke is at Southern Lanes every Friday and Saturday night from 8:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. There is no cover charge.
