SCOTTSVILLE — In a line of already historic football nights at Allen County-Scottsville, another was added as the Patriots beat Lone Oak 33-14 on Friday to advance to the Class 4A regional final for the first time in school history.
“I’ve had some family that has played for the Patriots,” Allen County-Scottsville sophomore running back Hunter York said, “and they haven’t done so good. And so for us to come out here and make history, it’s pretty good.”
Allen County-Scottsville (9-3) now prepares to host Calloway County - a 28-25 winner over Franklin-Simpson on Friday - in next Friday’s third round.
The Patriots used an effective rushing game all night against Lone Oak (10-2), which reached the 4A state championship game last season. York led the Patriots with 131 yards on 16 carries and one touchdown. He came into the game averaging just 45 yards per game.
“If Hunter York was 6-foot tall they wouldn’t let him play football,” ACS coach Brad Hood said. “He’s (5 feet, 5 inches) of nothing but heart and he never quits churning. You match him with the O-line we’ve got and he’s a dangerous individual.”
Complimenting York was sophomore fullback Brandon Boards. He finished with 93 yards on 16 carries, including a 43-yard run in the fourth quarter. It looked as if Boards had been gang tackled by the Purple Flash, but the referees never stopped the play and Boards emerged to run the ball into the end zone. Boards also scored on a 10-yard touchdown in the second quarter and a four-yard run in the third quarter.
“People look at Brandon as a calm kid,” Hood said. “But there’s a mean streak in him and he does not like to lose, and he hates to get tackled.”
Defensively, the Patriots slowed the Purple Flash’s spread offense. Lone Oak senior quarterback Jamarielle Brown completed 20 of 32 passes for 225 yards, but threw three interceptions, including one while the Purple Flash was deep in Patriot territory and trailing 27-14 in the fourth quarter. Allen County-Scottsville sophomore defensive back Jacob Costello intercepted the pass in the end zone to give the Patriots some insurance.
“Their quarterback will be one of the best athletes we face,” Hood said. “We’ve got the type of kids that don’t like to be told they can’t do something. When you put them up against the wall like that they fight like dogs. We came in with a good game plan and the kids did exactly what we said.”
As good as the Patriots’ rushing attack was, when they needed to pass they did. Junior quarterback Cory Cooper connected on seven of eight passes for 144 yards. His only incompletion was an interception when the Patriots attempted a fake-punt on fourth down - Hood said he was trying to be greedy with the play call.
Cooper also found senior wide receiver Ben Mahaney on a 66-yard touchdown pass early in the third quarter.
“Everything was just there tonight,” Cooper said. “The routes got open quick and we did the things we needed to get the job done.”
Lone Oak head coach Jack Haskins said his team just didn’t play its kind of football on Friday night.
“It wasn’t as much their defense as it was us,” Haskins said. “We didn’t play our A-game at all tonight. We probably played the most poorly offensively we have all year, and maybe their defense did have something to do with it.”
Allen County-Scottsville will play Calloway County on Friday in Scottsville.
“That has been one of our goals this season is to practice on Thanksgiving day and then play the day after Thanksgiving,” Cooper said.
