The top-seeded Purples (9-2) will host second-seeded Owensboro - 49-21 winners over Grayson County in the opening round - on Friday in a rematch of a regular-season game BGHS won 26-21 in September. Owensboro eliminated Bowling Green from the 2008 playoffs with a 28-21 second-round win.

On Friday, the Purples held a 15-0 halftime lead before putting the contest away in the second half. LaVance Anderson scored three touchdowns in the third quarter after his younger brother Tevin scored twice in the first half.

“We knew our last home game we didn’t do too well (an 18-10 loss to Warren Central), so we knew this game we wanted to go out here and do one thing - and that was win,” Tevin Anderson said. “We didn’t want it to be our seniors’ last night here. And to be for real, I didn’t want this to be the last time playing with my brother. It’s an honor to play with him. We came out here and took care of business.”

The final score wasn’t entirely indicative of the play on the field, as BG scored its 15 first-half points in the first seven minutes. BG also was held to 38 yards of total offense in the first half.

The fourth-seeded Tigers (3-8) held the ball for 16:54 of the first 24 minutes and stalled inside Bowling Green’s 10-yard line twice.

“Bottom line - it just boils down to whether we’re gonna play with a physical nature and whether we’re gonna play with a mental preparation that will reflect what we try to do in practice,” BG coach Kevin Wallace said. “I just can’t say how disappointed I am in how we take practice to the field on Friday. I’m perplexed. I’m disappointed in myself. It’s obviously a reflection of where we’re going, and that falls back on me.”

The Purples took the opening possession of the second half and went right to work. A four-play drive covering 61 yards was capped by LaVance Anderson, who went 32 yards up the middle nearly untouched to make it 22-0.

Hopkinsville went straight backward on the ensuing series, starting from its own 19 and ending on the 5, where Hutton White lined up for the punt in his own end zone. White mishandled the snap and Tyreon Clark dropped White for the safety and a 24-0 lead.

LaVance Anderson made it 31-0 with 3:13 left from 27 yards out. Taking a handoff from the shotgun, LaVance Anderson burst to his right and broke free, lowering his left shoulder at the 10 to shrug off Nate Stewart and waltz in from there.

LaVance Anderson scored just 19 seconds later, after Perry Allen fumbled the following kickoff while fighting for extra yardage at his own 5. Anderson took it around left end on the next play and it was 38-0.

“We still got a lot to work on - it just depends on who wanted it more,” Tevin Anderson said. “I guess we wanted it more than they did and we came out with the ‘W.’ ”

Tevin Anderson helped BGHS get off to a quick start with two early scores. Hopkinsville tried to punt from its own 15 on the game’s first drive, but Clark’s rush off the left edge forced White to pull the ball down, scramble and throw the ball to no one in particular.

An intentional grounding call gave BG the ball at the HHS 4, and Tevin Anderson took it in from 4 yards out two plays later with a fullback option over left guard to make it 7-0.

Tevin Anderson scored from 3 yards out with the same play, this time to the right with 5:39 to go in the first, putting BG up 15-0.

The Tigers got on the board with 5:52 left on a three-yard run by Layton Boyd.

Hopkinsville starting QB John Ed Cessna finished 12-for-26 for 89 yards before being lifted for Josh Denton, who went 6-for-20 for 48 yards.

LaVance Anderson finished with 74 yards rushing, while Tevin Anderson totaled 48.
