Cowboy Jason Wallace ropes a calf Thursday at Heritage Livestock Inc. in Oakland. Wallace, who grew up in Ohio County, has been working as a cowboy since the early 1990s. With his position at Heritage, Wallace has several responsibilities, including doctoring sick cattle like the one pictured above. Although he says he enjoys the paycheck, to Wallace money is not the most important thing. “My job is a way of life, not a way to make a living,” Wallace said. In addition to Wallace, Heritage also employs a second cowboy, Buddy Jones of Smiths Grove. On Thursday, Wallace spent several minutes attempting to catch the sick calf before he was finally able to trip it up and treat it for a minor respiratory problem. “These are God’s critters, they’ve got a mind of their own,” Jones said.
