A former cemetery owner accused of failing to provide gravestones for paying clients faces theft charges.

Eileen Theresa Santangelo, 56, 154 Shanks Mills Lane, was indicted Wednesday by a Warren County grand jury on three counts of theft by deception of more than $500 but less than $10,000.

According to Warren County Commonwealth’s Attorney Chris Cohron, Santangelo was the owner of Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens on Scottsville Road.

Between April 8, 2008, and July 18, 2009, Santangelo allegedly was paid by three clients for grave markers that as of last week’s indictment still had not been delivered, Cohron said, adding that the alleged thefts totaled “several thousands of dollars.”

Santangelo’s business practices have been questioned in the past.

Lawsuits were filed against her in the past several years in Kentucky and Maryland for her operation of cemetery businesses there, and she has been convicted in Maryland in theft cases.

A warrant has been issued for Santangelo’s arrest in this case and additional charges may be pending, Cohron said.

Court records do not list an attorney for Santangelo. Warren Circuit Judge John R. Grise has set a $10,000 surety bond in her case.

Each count is a Class D felony punishable by up to five years in prison.
