CAMDEN, S.C. — A memorial service will be held Monday, March 11, 2013, at 1 p.m. at Camden’s Bethesda Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church’s Westminster Hall. A private burial will take place prior to the service. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to Bethesda Presbyterian Church, 502 DeKalb St., Camden, SC 29020.

Edward Wallace “Sonny” Barr Jr., 88, of Camden, S.C., died March 4, 2013. Born in Bowling Green, he was the son of the late Dr. Edward Wallace Barr Sr. and Bess Moseley Barr. He was a graduate of the Kentucky Military Academy and attended Western Kentucky University, Maryville College and Vanderbilt University.

During World War II, he was a U.S. Army Air Corps Fighter Pilot Trainer. While stationed at Hawthorn Airfield near Orangeburg, S.C., he met his wife of over 50 years, the late Bette Carolyn Culler of Orangeburg, S.C. While living in Bowling Green, he was co-owner of Leichhardt Hillview Nursery, president of Dibrell-Kentucky Tobacco Co., a member of The Presbyterian Church, the Sons of the American Revolution, as well as the Barons, XV, and the Rotary Club. After moving to Camden in 1994, he became a member of the Bethesda Presbyterian Church where he served for many years as an elder. He was also former member of the Camden Rotary Club, an avid gardener and a master woodworker.

Survivors include his son, Edward Wallace Barr III of Sullivan’s Island, S.C.; a daughter, Carolyn Barr Hammond of Camden, S.C.; grandchildren, Mika Holliday Lentz (Grant) of Lansdowne, Pa., Edward Wallace Barr IV of Savannah, Ga., Elizabeth “Bess” Hammond Olander (David) of Falls Church, Va., and Philip Rayland Hammond of Charleston, S.C.; and a brother, Dr. Robert Moseley Barr of Bozeman, Mont.

Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel, is in charge of the arrangements.
