Greek Week a success at WKU

Recently, the WKU Greek community celebrated Greek Week. This is a week of competitions, fun and philanthropy. The week culminates with a Red Cross blood drive and a “canstruction” event where cans of food are used to construct theme-related structures.
While several events are purely for fun, the blood drive and “canstruction” can be life changing. This blood drive has been recognized for many years as one of, if not the, largest blood drives in the Kentucky-Tennessee region. This year, 1,322 pints of blood were donated, which could save over 3,000 lives. The 61,000 cans of food used for “canstruction” were then donated to local food banks. In addition, each sorority and fraternity supports a local philanthropy. Final numbers for this year are not available but are anticipated to match or exceed last year’s efforts, when 66,000 service hours and $250,000 were donated to local nonprofit organizations.

I want to say how much I appreciate the 1,450 sorority women and 950 fraternity men who attend WKU to receive an education and donate their time and effort to make this a better community. Their philanthropic efforts are greatly appreciated and they demonstrate that “The Spirit Makes the Master.”
