Bowling Green’s Madisyn Peeples continued her climb to the top of the cross-country heap with a second-place finish in the 3A state cross-country meet Saturday at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington.
One year after finishing 10th, Peeples completed the 5K race in a time of 18:18.95 – finishing runner-up to Daviess County senior Whitney O’Bryan.
“There is not much of a better race that she could have ran,” BG coach Matt Hamilton said. “Whitney was just physically a little bit stronger. You could see that.
“But Madisyn hung with her almost to the end. Madisyn did the best she could. Gosh, what a great second-place finish.”
Peeples stalked the pace before making her move in the second mile.
She held with O’Bryan until the final stretch, before O’Bryan was able to pull away and win by nine seconds.
Peeples said she ran the race the way she wanted, and added she hopes it is a springboard for bigger things next season.
“You use what other people are usually weak on,” Peeples said. “I was just trying to draft, stay behind, and work my way up throughout the race. I think it worked out well.”
