The young Greenwood Gators needed inexperienced players to step up this season, and Alex Schneller has met the challenge.

The sophomore guard scored 13 points as Greenwood (8-9) held on to beat Franklin-Simpson 53-50 at home Tuesday.

Schneller and fellow sophomore Jonathon Lewis have taken on starting roles for the Gators.

“We’ve known we have to play a role, and we’ve stepped up and done our part,” Schneller said. “It’s gone really well. I’ve fit in well with the team.”

Schneller also had a game-high eight rebounds against FSHS.

His 17 points paced Greenwood in Friday’s 72-52 loss at Warren Central.

“He can shoot it and get in there and post up,” GHS coach Jason Stonebraker said. “What makes him so good is that he changed his body this past summer. He got in the weight room, bulked up and worked on his shot, and for somebody that young to step into a big role is nice.”

The Gators return to district play at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Warren East.
