Franklin-Simpson’s Sydney Gooch has big shoes to fill, but she’s risen to the challenge for the Lady Wildcats.
Gooch, a 6-foot junior center and the younger sister of Western Kentucky star Chastity Gooch, led FSHS with 20 points in Tuesday’s win over Warren East.
“The sky’s the limit for her,” Franklin-Simpson coach Josh Matthews said. “She’s a tremendous athlete, has terrific size and has a nice touch on the ball. Her ball handling has improved, and she’s even been able to play the point some for us.”
Gooch scored 10 points during the Lady Wildcats’ 19-3 run to start the game. She also pulled down five rebounds.
“I’ve been working on a little bit of everything,” Gooch said. “There’s always room for improvement.”
Gooch looks up to her sister, she said, and hopes to play at the next level.
It’s a realistic goal if she keeps working, Matthews said.
“She’s just got to fine-tune her skills over the summer,” he said. “She can be a legitimate Division I player, but she’s got to keep working over the summer and get a little better at everything. She’s certainly capable.”
