Western Kentucky distance runner David Mokone has been named the Sun Belt Conference Male Track Athlete of the Week.

Mokone, a junior, outran 41 competitors in the 800-meter run in 1:48.65 on Friday at the Rod McCravy Memorial in Lexington. The time was 0.04 of a second off his own school-record time and 0.02 of a second off the meet record.

His time is the fastest in the Sun Belt Conference this season by nearly three seconds. Mokone won the 800 at the 2012 Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Championships and finished runner-up in the event at the indoor championships. Mokone was named the conference’s Most Outstanding Track Performer at the 2012 Indoor and Outdoor Championships.

Mokone’s Athlete of the Week award is WKU’s second this season. Senior Houston Croney was named the league’s Male Field Athlete of the Week after winning the weight throw at the UAB Blazer Invitational on Jan. 11.
