Clem.... The Tower of virtue who paid somebody to write term papers for players at Minnesota thus creating the academic 'scandal'? So, let me get this right, Petrino should never be allowed to coach again, anywhere because he left programs hanging by leaving early and unannounced and cheated on his wife? Seriously? Does a person never get a chance again? Maybe BG will be the place he can get his relationship together again with his wife without the glare of big school programs and big city lights.

I love how judgmental all you folks are. Coach Petrino was very brave in his discussion of his past during the press conference. He made a mistake. A mistake that is common in amongst members of our Churches too. Give this man and his family some peace. He didn't sin against you. You all might want to stop throwing the stones, or one might hit you in the back of the head.

I am in FL and I wanted to see if was just me or that the hiring of this man was an error, it looks like people of WKU feel the same way I do. To pay him probably what Willie is makeing at USF is a big error. As they say it doesn't pass the smell test

To clarify: I 'freaking' LOVED the 'Clem era'--Haskins' coaching will be the only good memories I have of any WKU sport, for the remainder of my life.

    SC Knoital: read it...yup--thanks: http://blogs.ajc.com/jeff-schultz-blog/2012/12/10/western-kentucky-is-first-to-cave-hires-petrino/
What's been ailing WKU Sports for years is what's been ailing WKU--and BG, for that matter--for years: a lack of morals and standards that goes into educating young men and women to go out into the community and world, and be good, productive people with high moral character. It was lacking when I was there in the early 80s, and it's been lacking ever since.
A 'deal with the devil' was exactly the phrase leaping into my mind as I 'refreshed' my own memory about Petrino.
His wikipedia entry shows a clear pattern of either causing his own career dissolution, or leaving when he sees his meal-ticket panning out (Vick).
Get ready for lots of 'new' turmoil, WKU--you've been disappointing and disgusting me for years (since the Clem era), and looks like you've sought out and paid for a new way to bring dishonor to the community in BG.
Don't let him attend any WKU volleyball games--we have a good program now, and he should come into his job wearing an ankle monitor (except, 'not on his ankle').

Everyone in BG and anyone who has any interest at all in WKU should read the article in the AJC by Jeff Schultz. He sums it up very well, and knows all there is to know about one Mr. Petrino. Be ashamed, Mr. WKU President and Mr WKU AD, be very ashamed!

I believe everyone deserves a second chance...however: WKU what are you thinking? This sends the wrong message to our student athletes, our students, and WKU faculty, which is win football games at any cost. I am afraid tomorrows leaders have terrible role models in the form of WKU Leaders.

With this hire WKU officially becomes a member of the cesspool that is Division I football. Can't believe they did it.

I am outraged that WKU has hired Bobby Petrino as coach of the Hilltoppers! My daughter and I are Razorback alums, but the young woman I consider my granddaughter is at WKU now.

How can we possibly teach our children morals when people like Petrino with the most grievous of errors are allowed to succeed? It was not only poor judgment, Petrino proved he is a liar, cheat, and when he misused university funds, in my world this makes him an embezzler – a thief.

Petrino’s treatment of our athletes in AR was vulgar and common, and many alumni did not support him despite his winning record. He ruined the Razorback team for the foreseeable future, both its reputation and morale.

What are you thinking, WKU officials? Certainly the development of fine young adults should be your goal rather than a winning football team. Petrino should never be allowed on a college campus again!

Larry, coaches make more than teachers for the simple reason that there are fewer good coaches than teachers. Plus, people will pay good money to watch coaches' subordinates do what they do. How many people will pay to watch students takes notes from a good professor?

You folks who are the Morals Police, good for you. Now go into your workplaces and see if you can get your peers fired for whatever moral shortcomings that they may have. Their flaws will affect you more than Petrino's ever will.

Larry Fein, how closely did you follow Taggart's departure? Did you notice that the majority of the salary offer WKU was set to put on the table was coming from private sources (not from WKU operating budget) such as Hilltopper Foundation, alumni and local businesses who specified that their donation was to be used solely for paying and retaining a head football coach?

Unfortunately, we were still in Louisville (Louisville Alum) during the Petrino years. He was dishonest with the fans and told the SID of Louisville he was staying and literally walked into a press conference and said he was leaving for the Atlanta job. After he left the CJ reported that players said he was brutal in practice. He went to Atlanta and bailed on that job after 9 (I think) games for Arkansas; we know what happened there. He is an exceptional coach but brings a LOT of baggage and distrust. I feel that as soon as a better offer comes along he'll leave just as abruptly as he did in Louisville and Atlanta. I hope that's wrong but let's see what happens; hopefully he's changed his stripes.

You think Petrino deserves a second chance? Guess what. After Louisville & the Atlanta Falcons, Arkansas was it. Then he manipulated school rules and funds to get his mistress a job for which she wasn't remotely qualified; lied to his boss, his family, his staff, his players, and his fans; and left the program high and dry in April when every decent coach was already locked in to another team. Arkansas just went 4-8 this season because he couldn't keep it in his pants and there was no one available to take over the reins.

It wasn't just about the lying. Or the affair. Arkansas funneled a lot of money into new facilities that are still being built and new program structures that are going to have to be redone - all with the promise of what Petrino could do. They were repaid not only with a scandal, but with dramatically decreased ticket sales, decreased television deals, decreased recruiting prospects, decreased respect. (And believe me - I'm from Arkansas; I've heard all the pathetic jokes.)

No, this scandal wasn't on the same level as Penn State or some of the others, but then again, Arkansas doesn't have the reputation and alumni backing PSU or some of the others have to be able to recover as quickly. Petrino cost Arkansas dearly, so you'll excuse me if I'm not laughing off his selfish mistakes with a quick coed joke.

So Good Luck Western Kentucky. Let's hope the damage he leaves behind is worth whatever you can get out of him during the short time you'll have him.

The football/basketball coach at all division 1 A schools is the highest pain employee! Their programs bring in the most money. Guess that says something about the whole countries priorities!

Petrino will be getting paid more than any other WKU employee.
Really says something about WKU's (and Kentucky's) priorities.
So much for being a "leading American University with international reach".
I doubt many faculty members will appreciate the situation.

To those who think Bobby Petrino deseves a "second chance" - please, this guy is on his fifth or sixth chance aready. Have you forgotten how he left Louisville for the head coaching job with the Atlanta Falcons? Have you forgotten when the times got tough in Atlanta how he left for the Arkansas position? We don't even need to get into what happened in Arkansas!

What this guy does in his personal life is his business - personally I could care less! However, his track record shows that he is only about one person - Bobby Petrino. Everywhere he goes, drama follows and he leaves the team/instituion in much worse shape than when he got there.

For those who are into quotes - try this one: "Steal from me once, shame on you. Steal from me twice, shame on me". This guy is bad news - wake up!

Some of you people need to get a life. Having an affair has nothing to do with being a football coach. Get off your high horse.

I think it is a great hire for WKU and kudos to the Administration to give this guy a second chance at coaching college football. I'm utterly amazed with those who are already kicking the man to the curb w/o giving him an opportunity to redeem himself. How many mistakes have you made and got a second chance in life to better yourself. Let them man coach; if you don't like it, don't go to the games!

My friends at WKU: I congratulate you on getting a top notch coach. I truly wish you well.

Bobby Petrino has a pattern and I fear you will see it play out at WKU. That pattern is to parlay what he has into something he wants even more. So my guess is you have him for maybe three years.

Enjoy them. They will be good years for WKU football. You'll probably win the Sunbelt and be ranked.

    But then he'll be gone.

Amen....WKU Fan. What has happened to forgiving others? We all make mistakes but What Would Jesus Do? Turn his head and ban this man from all things? Remember, we are not to JUDGE.

Bobby Petrino is not perfect...no one is! I do believe he will be good for the football program and the university. He may fall back into his old ways, but he will pay for it. 1.2 million dollars will go along ways on the Hill!

Wow! How can WKU ever suspend an athlete for improper behavior or punish a student for cheating when they go out and PAY a football coach known for the above to supervise a football team that apparently will make a deal with the "devil" to win at ANY costs? WKU has slipped right below the edge of the pond scum....geeze

Oh I am so with you Garrynews. The entire Western Kentucky family should come together and kick this man to the curb. He cheated on his wife, he hired the tramp, and then he lied to his boss and created shame upon the university.

Can't wait to welcome the Petrinos to town!

My pleasure and joy seeing WKU succeed over the past 2 seasons in football, have truly pleased me.I am a huge Kentucky fan and the loss to Western this season although painful. was something I took for hope for Western. Now with the announcment of that trash being named head coach after what Western has done to get where they are now is terrible.I call on all true Western fans and alumni to denounce this travesty. The pride and hard work have all become for naught with one sad mistake. No integrity,no morals,no personal pride is now stamped on Westerns proud program.Rise Red Towel lovers and get this injustice overturned! Now,before he shames this school.I am only one former WKU fan,but I hope there is enough pride and morals left in our fans, students, and administration to not succumb to hiring this scum.
