Greenwood catcher Aeron Smith signed to play college softball at the University of Tennessee-Martin on Wednesday.

Smith said she considered Mississippi and Belmont, but ultimately decided on UT-Martin.

“As soon as I got there, it felt like home,” Smith said. “The coach is amazing. He was really nice. It was just a homey place, and I liked the campus.

“It’s a dream come true. I’ve always wanted this. Ever since I was young, I’ve dreamed to play D-1 ball.”

Smith was a key part of the Lady Gators’ 44-0 season that culminated in the third state title in program history.

She was named the MVP of the District 14 Tournament and Region 4 Tournament and was named to the State All-Tournament team.

Smith enters her senior season a career .399 hitter with 159 RBIs and 66 extra-base hits, including 10 homers.

Smith said she is happy to have her college decision out of the way and is ready to focus on her final season at Greenwood.

“It’s such a relief to know I have this off my shoulders,” Smith said. “I’ve signed, but I haven’t given up. I’m still going to continue to work and give it my all and hopefully win another state championship.”
