Western Kentucky’s track teams claimed first place in three events Thursday and Friday at the UAB Blazer Invitational in Birmingham, Ala.

Joseph Chebet won the 3,000-meter run in 18:19.47, beating the previous meet record by more than 16 seconds. David Mokone was second in the event at 18:30.64.

Houston Croney won the weight throw with a toss of 58-01.25.

Karleigh Parker tied with Kennesaw State’s Michelle Quimby for the win in the pole vault with a 12-01.5 mark. Parker’s vault equaled the school record she set at last year’s Sun Belt Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships and tied the Blazer Invitational record.

Sharika Smith was runner-up in the triple jump with a mark of 40-06.25 and finished third in the long jump with a leap of 18-06.5.

WKU’s track squads return to action Friday and Saturday at the Illini Classic in Champaign, Ill.
