Bowling Green’s Capitol Arts Center is showcasing films virtually as a way to maintain interest in the theater amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The Capitol has been showing documentaries that are part of the Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers series. This tour showcases a variety of issues covered by southern filmmakers.

The next film in the series is the documentary “Picture A Scientist” which will be shown to the public online at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. After the movie, a special Q&A session will be held online with director Sharon Shattuck.

“It’s been a great process because this series connects distinguished filmmakers with the community,” event organizer Ernie Small said. “The Capitol just isn’t ready to show films just yet, but we are invested in keeping the community interested in this series.”

According to Small, these virtual showings are a great way to slowly get people back involved with the Capitol without risking their health. Currently, the center’s next live, in-person showing is the film “Hocus Pocus” on Halloween weekend.

Per the Capitol Arts Center’s website, “Picture A Scientist” chronicles the groundswell of researchers who are writing a new chapter for women scientists.

Biologist Nancy Hopkins, chemist Raychelle Burks and geologist Jane Willenbring lead viewers on a journey into their own experiences in the sciences, ranging from brutal harassment to years of subtle slights.

The documentary encounters scientific luminaries – including social scientists, neuroscientists, and psychologists – who provide new perspectives on how to make science itself more diverse, equitable and open to all.

Information concerning how to stream the film will be provided in the near future on the Capitol’s website.

Only one more virtual documentary is scheduled for the calendar year as “Raggae Boyz” will be shown Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. The film chronicles the Jamaican national soccer team attempts to qualify for the World Cup.
