Berea College honored Philicia Riser of Bowling Green as a Carter G. Woodson Legacy Scholar for outstanding accomplishments in academics, service and leadership.

Kahlil Baker, Berea's coordinator of minority services, said the award honors the late Dr. Carter G. Woodson, a Berea graduate. A respected historian, Woodson is known as "the Father of Black History."

"This award is named in his honor as a means of recognizing African-American high school juniors who have demonstrated outstanding character, academic achievement and leadership – as exemplified in the life of Dr. Woodson and the legacy of Berea College," Baker said.
