Long before the Bowling Green Hot Rods came to the area, professional baseball debuted in Warren County this month in 1939, when the Bowling Green Barons joined the Kitty League. Ben F. Howard, the president of the Kitty League, spoke at a banquet celebrating Bowling Green’s first semi-pro baseball team.
The Kitty League was a minor league baseball association for Kentucky, Illinois and Tennessee. (The first letters of the states provided the league’s name; occasionally, the “I” stood for Indiana as well as Illinois.) The Barons organization had previously been around for several years in non-pro leagues and was part of the Kitty League from 1939 to 1942.
