Emma Augusta Sweatt Whitney, 89, died Nov. 20, 2004, at North Arundel Hospital in Glen Burnie, Md.

The Bowling Green native attended Morgantown Elementary School, State Street School and Philander Smith College in Little Rock, Ark. She was a former teacher in the Butler County school system, a retired patrol lady for the Bowling Green Police Department and was a member of Order of Eastern Star No. 128, P.H.A. and NAACP and was a Jefferson Award recipient. She was a daughter of the late Morton Sweatt and Nannie Louvalle Sweatt and the wife of the late George E. Whitney Sr. She was preceded in death Funeral will be at noon Saturday at Taylor Chapel A.M.E. Church, where she was a member, former church trustee and a member of Rainbow Circle and the Senior Choir, with burial in Bell Cemetery in Morgantown. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Burnam & Son Mortuary.

Survivors include a daughter, Doris Jean Armstrong of Millersville, Md.; two sons, James Jimmy Whitney and his wife, Wilhelmina, and George E. Whitney Jr., all of Bowling Green; a stepson, Robert E. Whitney and his wife, Lilly, of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; five grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 19 great-stepgrandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
