Former Bowling Green mayor dead at age 68

Dr. Spero Gus Kereiakes, 68, of Bowling Green died at 2:45 a.m. Wednesday at his home. The Warren County native was Bowling Green mayor from 1972 to 1975, a city commissioner from 1968 to 1971 and a Korean War Army veteran. He was a graduate of Bowling Green High School, Western Kentucky University and University of Louisville Dental School. He opened his dental practice in 1962 in an office above the Capitol Theater.During his tenure as a city commissioner and mayor he helped shape the current city manager form of government; combined the water, sewer and electric services and developed plans for the creation of city parks, including Lampkin Park and the park now known as Kereiakes Park, named in his honor.He continued his service to the community by serving on the Bowling Green Municipal Utilities Board, the Barren River Area District Development Board, the Barren River Area Safe Space Board, the Bowling Green-Warren County Hospital Board (now known as The Medical Center), the Bowling Green-Warren County Health Department, the Warren County Recreation Board and as a regional ombudsman. He also served on the United Way Campaign Committee and was past president of the Warren County Jaycees and former vice-president of the state Jaycees. He was a member of the Rotary Club, JCI Senate, Kentucky Dental Association and American Dental Association.Kereiakes received the Jaycee Distinguished Service Award and the Jaycee Billy Sumpter Award for his service. He was also inducted in the Bowling Green High School Hall of Honor. He was a son of the late Gus Spero Kereiakes and Bessie Phousanis Kereiakes.Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Christ Episcopal Church, where he was a lifelong member and served on the vestry, with burial in Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of J.C. Kirby & Son Funeral Home, Lovers Lane chapel.Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Dr. Spero Kereiakes Memorial Scholarship Fund, care of College Heights Foundation, Western Kentucky University, 1 Big Red Way, Bowling Green, KY 42101.Survivors include his wife, Helen Bartley Kereiakes, a daughter, Ann Toni Kereiakes of Louisville; a son, Dean Kereiakes of Bowling Green; two sisters, Evangeline Callos and Katherine Karas, both of Cincinnati; a brother, James G. Kereiakes of Cincinnati; four nieces and seven nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
