Popeyes is coming back to Bowling Green.
Just over a year after closing its location in Western Kentucky University’s Pearce Ford Tower food court, Atlanta-based Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen is working to open a restaurant at 6860 Louisville Road.
Construction is underway on the fast-food restaurant, which will be across Louisville Road (U.S. 31-W) from Warren East High School and next door to a Burger King restaurant.
Being built at a cost of $315,000 by franchise owner JPL Management Inc. of Elizabethtown, the new Popeyes will add to the commercial development along Louisville Road near the Kentucky Transpark.
JPL Management, headed by President Andrew Schory, is a longtime Burger King franchise owner. It has now branched out to the Popeyes franchise after last year’s purchase of Popeyes by Restaurant Brands International, the parent company of Burger King.
Restaurant Brands International, based in Canada, purchased Popeyes for $1.8 billion and added to its portfolio of more than 20,000 restaurants in more than 100 countries.
Founded in New Orleans in 1971, Popeyes features spicy chicken, chicken tenders, seafood and some regional items. The chain has grown to become the world’s second-largest quick-service chicken restaurant, behind only Yum Brands’ KFC.
The Popeyes chain ranked second behind Subway in the 2018 Temkin Experience Ratings that measure customer experiences. In that survey of 10,000 U.S. consumers, Popeyes earned a score of 81 percent to finish just behind Subway (83 percent) and ahead of Panera Bread (80).
Popeyes opened 118 domestic and 98 international restaurants last year. The chain has more than 2,600 restaurants in the United States and 25 other countries.
The chain has Kentucky locations in Covington, Elizabethtown, Florence, Fort Campbell, Fort Knox, Lexington, Louisville, Mayfield, Owensboro and Paducah.
