Warren County will have two farmers markets to chose from during November and December.

Following the lead of the Bowling Green Community Farmers Market, the SKy Farmers Market will move indoors for a Holiday Market.

Community Farmers Market will operate all season long on Saturdays and Tuesday but in a new location at 2319 Nashville Road. SKy will be open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 2 to Dec. 21 at 315 Beech Bend Road at Beechmont Farms.

Beechmont is a three-acre farm where produce is grown chemically free.

“Most of the acreage is outside, but we are getting ready for the high tunnel season,” said Birch Bragg, who manages Beechmont for brothers Patrick and Robert Reynolds. “We joined SKy in June and became aware that we really didn’t have a market past October. ... We have this 7,500-square-foot building ... with concrete floors ... so we approached the board and they decided they wanted to try it. We are happy to host it.”

This is a good way for SKy to retain and build customers who otherwise would seek other alternatives for their produce, he said.

“The goal is to continue to increase accessibility of local food all over Bowling Green,” Bragg said. “Local food is better for you because you know where it comes from. It provides jobs locally, and the carbon footprint is significantly less. Hopefully in years to come, it will be more than just a holiday market.”

There probably is room for as many as 30 vendors, and so far 20 have paid. A few others are likely to take part, according to Traci Brosch, a market publicist.

There will be multiple vendors with winter produce such as tender lettuces, cabbage, squash and other items, including jams and jellies. There also will be pasture-raised poultry and meat, Kenny’s Farmhouse cheese and a variety of gift and craft vendors, such as hand-made wooden bowls and baskets.

Bragg will make wood-fired pizzas, using dough made by Home Cafe and local ingredients as toppings.

“It’s all about using local food,” he said.

There will be a ribbon-cutting at 4 p.m. Thursday with the Mt. Victor Revue playing music. Chef Mike Riggs and his students will be using local meats, cheeses and breads to create appetizers. 

“It’s about showing people that this is the kind of food that can be created by ingredients grown in you own back yard,” Bragg said.

The Holiday Market also will feature a children’s market where kids can set up for free and sell any items that they have crafted or made themselves.

“So far, about 12 kids have shown interest in having everything from baked goods to ornaments and jewelry,” Borsch said.

Children can come and go and set their own price.

“I talked to 25 markets across the country to see how they handle children’s markets,” Borsch said. “The ones that were most successful were ones where children could come and go. They were more willing to engage with the public ... when you just give them an open platform.”

About 40 vendors are expected to participate in the Community Farmers Market, which will be from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. indoors beginning Nov. 2, and from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesdays. Community Farmers Market also is a sponsor and organizer of Food Day, which is Thursday at Western Kentucky University’s farm. There will be activities all day, and a farmers market and hayrides beginning at 4 p.m.
