After 13-year-old Deron Mills of Florence went under the water at a private, man-made lake in the Rivergreen subdivision Thursday evening, his cousin and brother tried to pull him to the sandy bank.
Then panic set in. The boy remained under water and they called 911.
The three young men, none of whom live in the gated community, had decided to swim at the lake. A homeowner's association board member came to the lake to see who the young men were and when she did, the two young men ran to her in distress, Warren County Technical Rescue Squad spokesman Stephen Harmon said.
She also called 911 and began comforting the young men.
Rescue personnel were called to the scene at 6:40 p.m. Deron's body was found by divers at about 10 p.m.
The lake depth in the middle is about 10 feet.
Deron and his older brother, 23, and cousin, 22, were attempting to swim to the diving platform when Deron went under.
Deron's brother and cousin are roommates who live on Creason Street in Bowling Green.
The gates of the subdivision have not been working properly, Harmon said.
