Bowling Green proved more than capable of coming back from a halftime deficit Friday at Warren Central High School. The Purples found themselves down by five at the half, but outplayed Warren Central in the second half en route to an 80-72 victory. I think the first half, they just outworked us, said Bowling Green basketball coach Ernie Simpson. They took the fight to us whipped us on the boards and everything, no doubt about it. The Dragons had a 14-6 rebounding advantage at the break, but Bowling Green won the battle of the boards in the second half to the tune of 17-11.Purples forward Terrez DeWalt pulled down five of his team-high seven rebounds and senior guard Josh Carrier scored 10 of his game-high 28 points in the fourth quarter. Their defense got better and we didnt continue to make all the tough plays we did in the first half, said Warren Central coach Tim Riley. They also outrebounded us in the second half and for us to beat them, we have to beat them on the boards. Warren Central tied the game at 59-59 with 6:46 left to play when Deion Holts scored on a layup, but the Purples outscored the Dragons 21-13 down the stretch. I thought we played a little stronger on the boards, Simpson said. I thought we just showed some more alertness and wrestle the lead away and then hold on to it. Carrier hit 4-of-6 free throws and added a field goal in the games final 1:29 to seal the victory. He becomes a whole lot better when theyre in the lead, Riley said. You have to play him tough, but you dont want to put him at the line. The Dragons were able to take the lead in the second quarter as senior guard Terkell Boards put on a show, scoring 11 points in a row, highlighted by a dunk at the 6:20 mark. Boards finished with 17 points to lead the Dragons. Despite playing the Fourth Region favorites close the whole night, Riley said he wasnt pleased with the outcome. We aint into playing Bowling Green tough anymore, Riley said. Theres not anybody in here that is happy with just playing them close.
