Medina Spirit, ridden by John R. Velazquez, won the 147th Kentucky Derby with a time of 2:01.02 at Churchill Downs in Louisville on Saturday, May 1, 2021. The win earned Velazquez his fourth garland of roses and trainer Bob Baffert his record seventh win. Medina Spirit was followed closely by Mandaloun in second place, Hot Rod Charlie in third and Derby-favorite Essential Quality in fourth. Attendance for the day reached nearly 52,000 — less than one third of the Derby's record crowd but the largest crowd for any U.S. single-day sporting event since the COVID-19 pandemic first hit the country in March 2020.
