Tops pick up another batch of mid-year additions

Western Kentucky announced the addition of another group of newcomers to the football program on Wednesday.

The WKU Football Twitter account confirmed the Tops have added seven players to the roster as mid-year additions through either the NCAA transfer portal or as junior-college signees.

Among the group is defensive back Abdul-Lateef Audu, who played this past season at Houston. A 6-foot-1, 185-pound defensive back from Van Nuys, Calif., Audu saw action in nine games (one start) as a junior and tallied 16 tackles (15 solo) along with two pass breakups and a tackle for loss in 2022.

Before joining the Cougars as a mid-year enrollee, Audu spent the 2021 season at College of the Canyons, where he tallied 11 pass breakups and an interception. Audu was rated a three-star prospect and the No. 17 JUCO cornerback by 247Sports.

Rex Robich, a 6-4, 210-pound long snapper who spent the past two seasons at Mississippi State, joins the Tops after appearing in six games for the Bulldogs last season a a redshirt freshman. Robich, from Palm Coast, Fla., was ranked a 4.5 star and the No. 73 long snapper by KohlsKicking.com out of high school.

Tyrese Black joins the Tops after playing the past two seasons at Louisiana-Monroe. The 6-4, 307-pound noseguard saw action in three games and tallied one tackle as a junior in 2022, and played in two games and had two tackles for the Warhawks in 2021. Prior to his time at ULM, Black, from McDonough, Ga., spent three seasons at Central Florida.

Josh Mensah, a 6-2, 190-pound defensive back from Riverdale, Ga., played as a freshman at Independence (Kan.) Community College in 2022, where he appeared in seven games and tallied 21 tackles (12 solo), one tackle for loss, one fumble recovery and two pass breakups.

Offensive lineman Mason Williams, a graduate transfer from Harvard with two seasons of eligibility remaining, joins the Tops after a successful stint in the FCS-level Ivy League.

At Harvard, the 6-foot-3, 290-pound native of Murfreesboro, Tenn., was a two-year starter at left and right guard. This past season, Williams earned All-Ivy League First-Team honors as well as Phil Steele First-Team All-Ivy League, Bluebloods Second-Team All-Ivy League, All-ECAC and New England Football Journal Second-Team All-New England accolades.

Williams helped pave the way for Ivy League rushing champion Aidan Borguet (1,182 yards, 10 touchdowns) in 2022 as the Crimson posted a 6-4 record.

Josh Shodipo, a 6-0, 190-pound defensive back, has one season of Division 1 eligibility remaining after spending the past two years at Division 2 Northern Michigan. This past season, Shodipo appeared in five games and tallied 11 tackles and a pair of pass breakups. In 2021, Shodipo played in 10 games for the Wildcats and recorded 30 tackles along with seven passes defensed.

Shodipo, a native of Oswego, Ill., also saw time as a punt returner on special teams, totaling nine returns over the past two years. Shodipo began his college career at Iowa Western Community College.

Defensive lineman Ryan Williams, a 6-3, 275-pound native of Pearland, Texas, has three seasons of eligibility left after completing his redshirt freshman season at Colorado in 2022. Williams played in all 11 games for the Buffaloes, tallying eight tackles (one tackle for loss). He also saw action as a true freshman in 2021, logging time in three games for Colorado.

WKU opens the 2023 season Sept. 2 against South Florida at Houchens-Smith Stadium. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m.
