Kentucky Legal Aid wants to help low-income people who might be eligible for Medicare assistance.

On June 21, Kentucky Legal Aid will be at the Warren County Public Library’s main branch, 1225 State St., to help people apply for financial assistance that could result in lower deductibles from 1 to 3:30 p.m.

Mike Brown of Kentucky Legal Aid said financial assistance for Medicare is offered year-round, though he has found through the years that a lot of people don’t know about low-income subsidies that are available.

“It’s offered all the time,” he said. “People are not aware.”

Kentucky Legal Aid representatives typically hold events throughout the Barren River area to help people apply for Medicare financial assistance, Brown said.

“We’ve come across people who have been on Medicare for 10 years and didn’t know they could get help,” he said.

At the event June 21, Legal Aid will help people through the process of applying for financial assistance, which Brown said many people find to be a complicated and confusing process.

“It’s complicated,” he said. “It’s difficult to navigate.”

According to a news release from Legal Aid, single people with an annual income of $18,444 or less, as well as checking, savings and other accounts below $14,100, might be eligible for financial assistance. Married couples making $24,924 a year or less, with checking, savings and other accounts totaling $28,150 or less, might also be eligible.

Brown said the kinds of subsidies available will vary from one person or household to the next.
