For the second straight year, D93 WDNS-FM is among 50 finalists nationwide for the Crystal Radio Award presented by the National Association of Broadcasters.

The 10 winners will be announced during the NAB Show on April 25 in Las Vegas.

The NAB Crystal Radio Awards, established in 1987, recognize radio stations for their outstanding year-round commitment to community service.

Tony Rose of WDNS-FM said it is an honor for the Bowling Green station to be nominated again.

“It reflects the body of work we do as a radio station,” Rose said Monday. “It shows the power of local radio.”

The nomination reflects the efforts of Stuff the Bus, WDNS-FM’s signature event, and other community events held by the station, said Alan Cooper, station manager for WDNS-FM, WKCT-AM and Talk 104.1-FM, on Monday.

Rose said the application for the Crystal Radio Award takes seven days to prepare and he was assisted in the process by his wife, Shelli.

“It’s not something that you just check some boxes on a piece of paper,” Rose said. “It takes a while to put together the narrative.”

Stuff the Bus, during which volunteers collected 16.25 tons of school supplies in the late summer of 2016, is more than just a week. In 2015, 15.5 tons of school supplies were collected.

“We have a great staff of people who work at it for 12 months a year,” Rose said of Stuff the Bus.

Cooper said WDNS-FM recognizes its community role with Stuff the Bus and other local events. Rose said the effort to shine a spotlight on the community never ends.

“It is like you are always campaigning for a political office when there is never an election day,” Rose said.

Among the 50 radio stations nominated is KDKA-AM in Pittsburgh, the first commercial radio station to broadcast in America, and stations in Cincinnati, St. Louis, New York and Chicago.

The only other Kentucky radio station to be nominated is WBUL-FM in Lexington and Fayette County.

WDNS-FM, WKCT-AM and Talk 104.1-FM are owned by the Daily News Broadcasting Co.
