FRANKLIN Much like its opponent on Wednesday night, the Franklin-Simpson baseball team entered Thursdays game against Warren East smarting from an opening day loss. The Wildcats took their frustrations out early and often, routing Warren East 10-1 at Greg Shelton Field. Wednesday night was a horrible opener in all aspects, Franklin-Simpson coach Greg Shelton said. We had a little talk (Thursday) morning at practice. We talked about character and pride. I felt like the guys came back tonight with a little better attitude. Getting the good quick start with the bats was certainly a help to us. Franklin-Simpson got on the board in the bottom of the first, plating four runs. Pitcher Michael Wilhite drew a leadoff walk and moved to third on left fielder Tye Burklows bloop single. Shortstop Chandler Shepherd was next and scorched a double to left-center field, scoring Wilhite. Burklow scored on a wild pitch by Warren East starter Justin Brooks, making the score 2-0 Wildcats. Center fielder Nick LaMasters laced an RBI single to left, scoring Shepherd. One batter later, first baseman Joey Traughber reached third base on a throwing error by Raider third baseman Bill Cooper. LaMasters scored on the play, giving Franklin-Simpson a 4-0 lead. Franklin-Simpson added a run in the second, on an RBI single by Wilhite as the Wildcats extended their lead to 5-0. The Raiders averted further damage when Raider center fielder Alex Hughes nailed Shepherd trying to score for the last out of the inning. The Wildcats offensive display continued in the third as Traughber doubled to leadoff and advanced to third on Coopers second throwing error of the game. Kyle Cauley walked, chasing Warren East starter Brooks. Designated hitter Josh Brown greeted new Warren East pitcher Nathan Thompson with an RBI single, giving Franklin-Simpson a 6-0 lead. Two outs later, Shepherd roped a line-drive double, scoring Cauley and Brown as the Wildcats extended the lead to 8-0.The Wildcats score their final two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Warren East left fielder Stephen Finn misplayed a fly ball to left by pinch hitter William Perkins, allowing Shepherd and LaMasters to score. Wilhite (1-0) went the distance for Franklin-Simpson, giving up three hits and striking out five Warren East hitters. Youve got to have a stopper after you get beat, Shelton said. Thats what he did for us. He stopped their bats and gave us a chance to get on top. He did an outstanding job for us. Brooks (0-1) went two innings plus, allowing eight runs six earned. Raiders coach Craig Delk said his team didnt come ready to play. We showed up and thats about it, Delk said. You cant just show up. If you dont come mentally prepared to play baseball, especially against a team like Franklin. Youre going to get in a hole early and youre going to get beat. Warren East (1-1) returns to the diamond today at 4 p.m. when it hosts Allen County-Scottsville, while Franklin-Simpson (1-1) played Christian County at noon today.
